Wild Veggies: Fiddle-head Ferns

Therme thoppu in Coorg, commonly called the fiddlehead ferns are famous for its earthy flavor that will tickle your taste buds. Summer has been not easy this year here in this hill station. I remember mum being worried a week back, looking at the sky with no hopes of rain, and an overnight downpour has brought back mum's and other optimistic planters some faith for next year's crop. 🌿One such treasured herb is the fiddlehead ferns, which has many other relative species, abundantly grown in different parts of the world. Fiddlehead greens are the coiled fronds of a blooming fern that yields bumper harvest during monsoon in the wild hillside close to the river banks. I grew up using some of these wild herbs. I am deeply grateful that i was called to be on this path to show the other part of the world our rich culture and food. This time also allows me to brush up my memory and also dive deep into some traditional food and how does Ayurveda understand these herbs


Flavor profile: Fiddleheads are sweet like asparagus, grassy and snappy like a great green bean, with a touch of broccoli stem.


Benefits: Fiddlehead ferns are fat free, saturated fat free, cholesterol free, sodium free, a good source of vitamin B2, copper, phosphorous and potassium. An excellent source of vitamin B3 and C and manganese thus helping with red blood cell creation, anti-oxidant properties, maintaining weight, helping maintain healthy blood pressure etc.,
